chore: synchronize completed integration to main [skip ci]

Carry the released 1.8.0 history and the completed workspace fixes through
036d57a to main. Preserve all uncommitted work in the existing worktrees.

Skip CI for this synchronization at the maintainer's explicit request.
The source tree is identical to 036d57a; release tags remain unchanged.
